Why Craft is Good for the Soul?

When you think of craft, what comes to mind? What are the benefits of crafting? How does it make you feel?   What exactly is craft?  Generally speaking, craft is an activity involving skill in making things by hand. Craft is discipline, imagination, dedication and inspiration. It’s about turning an idea into something beautiful using your own hands, technique, aesthetic vision and creative expression. It can be anything you want it to be.

This year has been a year like no other. During those days at home in isolation, many of us found ourselves with extra time to get those long overdue DIY projects done or we were able to fully engage our creative side through art and craft. It is a known fact that crafting can have a positive impact on our wellbeing particularly for those who may suffer from stress, depression or anxiety. Craft is extremely therapeutic and beneficial for our mental health. It can often be described as soul-cleansing and stress-relieving by just taking time out for yourself to express your creativity. Craft also plays an important role in communities and gives people the opportunity to bond and form relationships whether it is online or in person.

The unique feeling we experience when making something from scratch is second to none.  Have you ever lost yourself in time when working on a craft project? Do you feel happier, more content and at peace within yourself? The benefits that crafting offer are crucial now more than ever. With the pandemic causing a lot of uncertainty in our current lives, immersing oneself into a craft project has helped increase mindfulness and our general wellbeing. One of the most rewarding aspects crafting brings is the sense of joy and appreciation of turning an idea into reality. The skills learned along the journey and creating something meaningful is also very gratifying.

With Christmas steadily sneaking up on us, now is a great time to start thinking about creating your own decorative packaging and gifts.  Having lived through some challenging times of late, this Christmas will be about hope, gratitude, wellbeing and appreciating one another.  A gift crafted with love could be all someone needs to create that happy ending to what has otherwise been a very harrowing year.   If you truly want to show others how much you appreciate them or you're looking for an activity that's good for the soul, then art and craft should without a doubt,  be at the top of your list. So go forth and make a difference. Be inspired and get creative!  Happy Crafting!
